This Bronze cast created in 1927 by François Rudier is part of the monumental stairs of Marseille Saint Charles, in France. The statue - called “La Chasse” (hunting) - is part of a group of six similar pieces representing the region’s products (other being fruits, flowers, fishing, cereal harvesting and grapevine harvesting). This Pounamu Toki (nephrite jade or greenstone adze) from the South Island of New Zealand was donated to Stromness Museum in the late 19th or early 20th century by an Orcadian living in Twatt, West Mainland. It is a mystery how this artefact came to be in Orkney, but in the 19th century Orcadians were great seafarers and many travelled to the South Seas on whaling ships. The grooves along the side of this adze provide an insight into how this extremely hard material was cut and shaped. Did a scan of one of our company shirts for a quick project. This is the first time I’ve combined two sides of a soft-body scan - cloth tends to be somewhat floppy. To flip the shirt without messing up the fold pattern, I made a sort of cardboard sandwich I could press together. I also overexposed the shots to improve the scan. The cleanup wasn’t too bad. Even after deleting points from the platforms from the dense cloud they still made their way into the mesh a little. Ended up taking those out in Max, then smoothing things over in ZBrush. I also used ZBrush for the decimation and unwrap, and was really happy about the results. I like Max’s peel feature, but UV Master in ZBrush goes so much faster and gets rid of all the overlaps even if the result is bent a little. I also still need to find a faster way to patch up seams. There was one towards the “south” side of the shirt that I had to a 2nd channel unwrap -> bake -> photoshop -> bake to ch1 -> mask into texture approach. This unusual animal was discovered in the ancient rocks of the White River badlands of Niobrara County, Wyoming. The White River badlands stretch across parts of Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota and Nebraska and range in age from about 35 to 19 million years old. This skull comes from Merydoidodon culbertsoni, an animal commonly referred to as an oreodont. Oreodonts were small ungulates (hoofed animals) that somewhat resembled pigs. This ornately carved sandstone monument, said to weigh 20 tons and standing 2 meters high, is at the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quiriguá, an inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Department of Izabal, Guatemala. The piece was 3D laser scanned in 2019 during our extensive documentation survey at the site by our USF Libraries DHHC team. We utilized structured light scanners at various sub-millimetric resolutions on this monument. Besides the rich iconography carved on this ceremonial throne, the text in the cartouches describe the founding of the Quiriguá dynasty (see also Matthew Looper’s Quirigua: A Guide to an Ancient Maya City, 2007 for discussion and additional references).
